This year I really wanted to create a nice atmosphere by designing an autumn inspired tablescape for our family Thanksgiving dinner. Instead of the typical red, yellow and orange I was inspired by all the green and purple popping up this fall in our area. I wanted to touch on the hint of purple to make our statement a little different and somewhat romantic and cozy. In order to achieve a feeling of warmth I used colour, texture, repetition and layers. By layering a basic white table cloth, oatmeal fabric and plain white doilies I have created interest using texture and pattern while adding a touch of lacey romance. The doilies are placed in a staggered pattern to lead the eye down the table across the flowers. Ideally I would rather have fresh flowers obviously but for the quantity and colour that I needed, it just wasn’t in the budget. I find that some faux flowers are quite nice but really depend on the quality and colour. To avoid having cheap looking flowers, place full arrangements in simple pots and provide interesting and soft textures for the eye to rest on. The arrangements were kept fairly low so our guests don’t have to lean just to speak to the person across from them – how annoying would that be?! Instead of a standard place mat I wanted more of a runner to go across the table underneath each setting. The oatmeal runners are simply fabric cut into strips. I didn’t put to much thought into exact measurements because I’m okay with a little bit of an imperfect frayed edge for a rustic vibe. All of the place settings include an off white napkin, white dinner plate, white salad plate, a small gray bowl with a soft ruffled edge, silver cutlery and a wine glass. White candles along with mercury glass votive holders add a warm romantic glow for ambiance. Now on to the photos!!
Until next time…gobble gobble!
