We are a little ahead of schedule in the laundry room. I was planning an update in April but we spontaneously decided to get started by adding a DIY laundry room countertop, both for function and aesthetics. We bounced back and forth between wood and laminate because both are budget friendly (granite is just not in the cards right now :(). After perusing the prefab laminate at the store we decided to go with a wood (maple) option because the depth of the laminate was not what we needed (too short) and we were capable of staining and applying the wood surface ourselves. They did have a “Laundry Room” counter kit but it was almost $300 I think…
As you will see in the photos the previous owner had decided on a lilac coloured piant – not my first choice that’s for sure. I got to work painting a fresh coat because it needed it bad!! The laundry room/mud room is off of the garage and has no window so the colour choice in there is super important. At first I was going to go with BM Simply White but got out my swatches and decided on BM White Wisp. The room is now light, airy, fresh and feels more complete. It just feels clean.
Warning: These photos aren’t the prettiest but you get an understanding of how simple it is to make your own laundry folding surface.
I will post more on the transformation of this room as more projects are completed. We plan on adding a back splash, hooks for the little and reorganizing the cleaning crap supplies in the cabinets.
The edge has a Natural Birch Veneer that was ironed on and worked out very well.
We also had to notch out a piece of the counter to leave room for the hoses, the placement on the wall is kind of awkward and the surface would have been way too high to fold on if we placed it above, not to mention a huge gap that would have been created between the appliances and the counter.
Here is the view from underneath so you can see we used wood braces and corner brackets to secure the counter in place.
After trying four different stains we settled on the darkest one, Kona. The hardwood throughout our main level is dark so it goes well and connects the spaces through colour and texture.
After the stain dried we applied a Triple Thick Varathane.
Stay tuned for more updates.
