Paint and Trim

Before/After· Blog· Decor· DIY· DIY Decor· Home Tour

Hey Guys,

After numerous trips to the store and ten, yes ten, samples later I have finally picked a paint colour for my office. And guess what?! All those trips were positively worth it. I’ve been so anxious to style my office because I work from home and it’s important to me to be in an environment that excites me and gets the creative juices flowing. The office is our fourth bedroom that has never received any attention. It has served us in different ways; guest room, toy room, and now my office. Before the office just consisted of my desk and a chair that was on the main level in our home. It used to sit in front of a window right off the entrance/dining room, so needless to say when the paperwork overflowed it looked like a bomb went off. I just cannot have it at the front door, that drove me nuts! Nobody wants to walk in after a long day to A. a mess and B. a reminder of all the things you still need to do. So upstairs we go. I don’t love an office in a bedroom but hey who am I to complain. It’s spacious, quiet and has a fabulous view out the back. The paint has been ignored and well frankly the whole room has been ignored. Basic builder paint just isn’t going to cut it any longer, this is our third year in this house (BTW that’s a record YIKES!).

On to the paint selection! As you read earlier I tested a lot of colours. At first I just wanted a creamy off white but after going to IDS17 and hanging out with the Premier Infinity team I started thinking about the possibilities. I’m a creative person with a creative job so why not infuse some COLOUR!!! I was leaning toward green, then blue, and finally pink. Yay for pink! I was set on finding a beautiful dusty pink, something mature, romantic, and pretty. Finally, I landed on Premier Infinity Pink Sandstone, it is a beautiful shade with a brown undertone which lends itself to sophistication and beauty. I’m in love.

We went one step further by making the envelope (room) way more interesting and why not ask the better half to get some handy work done. Wink wink! Trim work can elevate a room like I’ve never seen. It’s simply incredible how you can take a relatively flat plain room and catapult into another level of greatness. With just a few pieces of pre-made trim frames this office has gone from builder boring to a custom creation. Call me crazy but I love interiors and the way a good design makes you feel so being just “excited” about this project is an understatement. Stay until the end for my top three tips on how to choose paint.

In the above shot (taken with my phone) you can see that the lighter pink (Premier Infinity Pink Sandstone) covered the darker pink (Premier Infinity Life In Pink) in just ONE COAT. No more multiple coats and multiple days painting. I wanted to put Premier Infinity to the test and I promise you I am super impressed and I only did one coat in the entire office.

Here are my top three tips for selecting your paint colour:

1. TEST. TEST. TEST.

I’m not yelling at you I swear. I tell this to everyone who asks me about paint selection. Do not buy an entire gallon of the colour you like in the store, there is a good chance you will waste your money and time. When you are at the store you have to remember you are in a huge retail space with giant florescent light bulbs. The swatch you pick in the store will absolutely look completely different in your home. Spend a few bucks on a small test pot.

2. Do not paint the test colour directly onto your wall.

I would strongly suggest making medium sized swatches of your own. The benefit of having the larger swatches is that you can easily move them from wall to wall at any time of the day. The light changes depending on the time so that means your colour changes as well. Play musical swatch, I promise you won’t regret it.

3. Paint in the same direction.

It’s as simple as it reads. Go up and down, don’t go in all different directions. This is especially important when you are using multiple application tools such as a brush and roller. You want the paint to spread evenly and dry evenly.

I haven't shared our dining room because well...the safety railing across the back door, no light fixture and our desperate need for new chairs (these ones are toast!) but how can I not share this view today. We plan on getting outside to enjoy the fresh air and snow. I hope you guys enjoy your day!
