Interior Design Show 2018 Highlights

Blog· Mood Boards & Inspiration

A new year equals new design trends and more design inspiration. The annual Interior Design Show took place last month in Toronto and I get excited to go each and every year, this year was no different. It’s a great place to source all kinds of new products, meet with the designers and of course take in all the interior design inspiration for to tap into in months ahead. I’ve gathered a number of highlights for you to see whats up and coming, still trending and to give you some fresh decor ideas that you might incorporate into your home.

Here are the top 6 highlights I noticed throughout the show:

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back baby! Its big, its bold and its durable! Floral prints, geometric patterns and large scale murals are popping up everywhere. They range in style, scale, price and can be found online. If you are thinking about wallpaper, I say go for it! It would be fantastic to add personality, pattern, texture and colour to a powder room, nursery, master bedroom or even a dining space.

Colour and Pattern

Although my heart loves simple neutral design I can see myself getting on board with the need for more colour as spring approaches. We have been so used to the minimalist palettes and design that maybe some are starting to tire of it…that is to be determined. Colour is creeping up on us again though, I am noticing more and more bold patterns and colours in wallpaper, paint, bedding and furniture. If you are a little nervous to plaster bright paint all over your walls then think about incorporating pops of colour through textiles and maybe even a pop in a single piece of furniture to get the conversation started.

Form

Interesting forms of furniture and finishes are popping up all around us, you just need to take notice. The shape of furniture is starting to shift and negative space allows it to breath and us take notice. Don’t be afraid to style a shelf with interesting collectables that take on new life due to the negative space around them. For example, a streamlined wire bowl against the white backdrop of a shelf or a non traditional rocking chair with brass tubular runners.

Lighting

Ah, lighting! Interesting lighting isn’t going anywhere. It is an investment and it can make an incredible statement. The options and price points here are endless. Lighting is becoming more sculptural and artistic in terms of its shape and scale. You can find an abundance of styles ranging from mid-century to ultra contemporary that range is size and purpose. When selecting lighting ensure that you are considering the purpose of the room, the activities that take place, scale and the overall atmosphere you are trying to achieve.

Kitchens

With all the open floorplans out there it is no surprise that people are looking to make the kitchen blend in to the rest of the home as much as possible. I noticed at the show how much the cabinetry looked like furniture rather then utilitarian pieces of wood. The paint colours and materials ranged from granite, quartz, wood and mixed metals that all worked together to not only make a statement but also seamlessly blend into other space and styles of furniture. As we know, the kitchen is the heart of the home and no matter what people always gravitate to that space when entertaining. Wallpaper, open shelving, oversized tile used in unique patterns, hidden appliances, curated serving ware, unique lighting and woven seating was all eye candy that is to be expected and anticipated in new kitchen design for years to come.

Art

The art that was presented at the show was fantastic. Of course, art is very very subjective and can only be appreciated when something sparks your interest and makes you think, reminisce or question intention. The actual imagery wasn’t the only detail that caught my eye but rather the frames. I see a big trend coming where we might see art framed with bold colours and materials such as neon acrylic rather then traditional wood or plastic.

We plan on getting outside to enjoy the fresh air and snow. I hope you guys enjoy your day!
