Our winters are long and our summers are short so we decided to overhaul our backyard to make the best out of the season all while welcoming our second child into the world…crazy I know. The plan was to install patio stones in the shape of a “T” to feature three zones: cooking, dining and a covered lounge. We were also in desperate need of a shed to store all the yard tools and outdoor toys. My husband worked tirelessly to install the stone through the month of June and let me tell you, it was no small task. The patio is approximately 6oo+ square feet in total so unless your husband or spouse is a contractor; I strongly suggest hiring a landscape crew with experience for a job of this size. In order to install the patio stone we had to have grass removed, loads of dirt removed, crushed stone laid and leveled, a barrier laid and then the actual stones placed in a pattern. Once the stones were laid and leveled the polymeric sand was applied to fill and seal the space in between each stone. That sounds straightforward but you need a lot of muscle to get the job done. We also had to fix a very large patch of grass, which has just started to grow back.
The lounge is the only space complete at this point so I decided a tour was in order. The other two zones will eventually be finished however I haven’t found the right dining chairs and the table is half way through, another project for my better half 😉 His honey-do list is quite long…
It was important to me to have a gazebo with a screen that was easy open and close to keep the bugs out and enjoy the lounge all season long, rain or shine. I also wanted comfortable wide seating with solid arms, outdoor friendly water resistant material, solar lighting, an area rug, accent pillows, low maintenance greenery and a few accessories to create an inviting space. I knew I did not want a glass coffee table as we had one before and with two kids its not really ideal outside. I also wanted comfy furniture with wide solid arms to avoid pillows slipping through thin arms and for general comfort to rest and lay down. Luckily I found the perfect set of club chairs, a versatile ottoman and a three seat sofa from Canadian Tire; the CANVAS Salina Collection is the perfect blend of elegance and comfort. So far I have loved every minute of lounging out on our patio in the fresh air and we will continue to use it right into the fall season. Check out our backyard before and how our patio lounge looks now.
It would be great to hear from you!
